The act of having identified a limiting belief (and writing it down on paper) begins the process of removing it from your subconscious mind. Why? Firstly, because when you write down that limiting belief, you often realize where it originates from—and quickly understand that it doesn’t originate from you; it wasn’t your choice.

Secondly, the act of writing down your limiting belief on paper EXTERIORIZES that sentiment or belief. It is now literally ‘outside of you’. You can look at that sentence on that piece of paper and decide whether you want it to remain a part of you or not.

There are a number of ways to eliminate a limiting belief. Once you have elicited a limiting belief, write down the exact opposite belief. Then, write down five to ten reasons why this new belief is TRUE.

You see, our BELIEFS are like a table-top. They are supported by ‘legs’ that consist of our past experiences that act as reference points. To collapse a limiting belief, you need to “sweep away” the legs that support it.

 

There are a few ways to do so.

The first way involves asking yourself why you believe this. Reflect upon your life and write down every experience you had that reinforced this belief. Try to trace this back to the earliest experience from where this belief emerged. Gather any evidence that suggests this belief is false. Can you think of any real life examples when a statement like this was not true? Can you think of any examples in your life where this statement about yourself was false?

Then, write down the opposite belief, and write down the reasons why each new, opposite belief is true. Your mind cannot hold on to two conflicting or contradictory beliefs.

The next step is rewriting negative experiences from your past, relating to your financial goal, into a new story with a wonderful, positive outcome, as if everything turned out great. This teaches your unconscious what you really want. It also helps reframe your negative experiences, in your subconscious mind. And thirdly, it will help you refine your goal-setting work by clarifying exactly how you want the money to show up in your life.

Let me give you a couple examples from my own life.

In 2006 my business soared from a turnover of £120,000 the previous year to £1,160,000—almost a ten-fold increase in sales. But we were owed over £100,000 in installments, clients weren’t paying up, my team was wasting their time chasing them up, business partners were upset because they weren’t getting paid their commissions on time, I felt hurt by their comments, and on top of everything I was working 16 hours a day and my relationship and health were suffering.

So I rewrote this story. Here is an extract of what I wrote:

“£1,160,000 flooded into my life and into my bank accounts, and all my clients and business partners were thrilled and delighted with the value they received. Everyone was paid on time and equitably, according to the value they contributed. My staff and my systems were outstanding, allowing me to only work three days a week.”

Doing this ‘rewrite’ helped clarify for me how I want to receive large amounts of money: with good feelings all around, and with excellent support around me.

Doing this exercise helps to dissipate the emotional charge of those negative experiences relating to receiving large amounts of money, and it helped me clarify exactly how I wanted the money to show up in my life.

Another useful exercise to eliminate limiting beliefs is writing 20 reasons why it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks or says about you pursuing your dreams.

Examples include:

  • “I follow my dreams no matter what, because no one else will do it for me!”
  • “I follow my dreams no matter what, because I don’t want the regret of not having gone for it, when I’m in my 90s!”
  • “I don’t let other people’s fears, prejudices, manipulation, or agendas determine what I do with my life! Only I know what I am truly capable of, and what I am truly meant to do with my life!”
  • “I don’t need to do things to gain approval from other, because I approve of myself!”
  • “If I don’t follow my passion, follow my dreams, and live out my TRUE LIFE MISSION then thousands of people around the world will suffer, because I haven’t helped them!”
  • “I MUST follow my dreams and my mission, because it is truly a sin to waste so much potential for doing good!”

Other techniques for eliminating negative or limiting beliefs include the “scrambler” technique (a Neuro-Linguistic Programming tool that involves repeating the fear or limiting belief in a funny mickey-mouse-like high-pitched voice, for example), or Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT, also known as ‘Tapping’). The concept here is that a belief in one’s mind is like a groove in a vinyl record. If you ‘scratch’ that groove in the ‘record’ over and over again, it will no longer be able to ‘play’ that pattern. The message becomes ‘scrambled’.

Other techniques I have used—and continue to use to this day—for eliminating limiting beliefs and reprogramming the mind include:

  • Affirmations
  • Visualization
  • Hypnosis
  • Subliminal software
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

I also find that immersion in wealth building education (reading books and listening to audio programs about successful wealth creators, attending seminars and retreats, etc.) “flood” my subconscious mind with positive beliefs about money and success. This helps eliminate those limiting beliefs even more.
